Celebrity stylist Oribe Canales, who has styled the hair of Jennifer Lopez and Lady Gaga, selected the pair to be part of his exclusive team of hair stylists for the fall collection’s show because of their expertise and vast knowledge of the hair industry.

“It is one of the highest honors in our industry to be part of the Armani show and we always enjoy working with Oribe who is an industry icon,” Joelle Ray said. “At Samuel Cole, we work hard to deliver a high-level of excellence to our clients. We always appreciate when others take notice and ask us to work with them. We saw some amazing looks in Paris and look forward to incorporating them into our styles this fall.”

The high-energy couture show entertained guests that included celebrities, models and fashion critics from around the globe, such as actresses Megan Fox and Cate Blanchett. Behind the scenes, adrenaline was also pumping. As members of the stylist team, Jack and Joelle helped create sensational hair looks to balance Armani’s fall line. Models with thick, long blonde hair that looked natural and effortlessly beautiful strutted down the runway.

“We were thrilled when Oribe asked us to join him in Paris. He has created amazing hairstyles for many fashion shows, and having him trust us to recreate his looks for the Armani show speaks volumes,” Jack Ray said. “Armani is known for creating styles that people can wear on and off the runway. The blend of unique and classic beauty enhanced the appeal of the clothes in his fall collection.”

The Rays predict that thick, long hair will be a must-have look for the fall season after seeing Armani’s couture line and styling the models’ hair to match. Natural or with the help of extensions, long hair is a great accessory to pair with other fall favorites, such as leggings and sleek trench coats.

He later became a licensed cosmetologist to expand his credentials as a hair stylist and makeup artist.

Salon Owners and Top Educators Attend Elite Classes at Bumble and bumble University in NYC

June 7-9, 2010 (RALEIGH, NC) – Samuel Cole Salon owners, Jack and Joelle Ray, along with their top Network Educators, Ashley Collins and Erin Shebaugh attended Bumble and bumble’s elite classes, Immersion III and Network Educator III. Joelle attended Immersion III which takes a comprehensive look at services, advanced customer service and innovative client outreach initiatives. Immersion III attracts the top minds Bb. Network (and the salon industry), who come together in a veritable think tank, sharing ideas, practices, and policies – collectively building stronger businesses. Jack, Ashley, and Erin attended Network Educator III which is designed to inspire and motivate Network Educators to ignite their staff’s passion for the craft through hands-on styling, styling assessments, advanced facilitation skills and product knowledge. The course introduces four learning categories: Facilitation and Speaking, Product Mastery, Leadership and Communication, and Bb Technique and Styling.

“We enjoy learning new ways of growing our salon and making it better. Bumble and bumble University is always a terrific resource for this,” said Joelle.

“I not only learned from the intensive course content, but also by really watching and studying the Bumble instructors’ methods of teaching our class. Bumble has excellent instructors and they inspired me to be the best educator that I can be,” commented Ashley.

“NE III’s main focus is to expand on the creative editorial aspect of our industry. It was incredibly exciting and quite an honor to work with editorial stylists for major shows during Fashion Week in Milan, Paris, and NYC, observe their creations, break them down and then recreate them on a model under the guidance of the very people who created them,” said Jack.
May 21, 2010 (RALEIGH, NC) – Holding true to their continuing commitment to their community, Jack and Joelle Ray, owners of the award-winning Samuel Cole Salon and Salon Moxie in North Raleigh, donated their team’s time and talent to “Pink on the Links” Fashion Show. Pink on the Links is part of the Rex Hospital Open, a Nationwide TOUR golf tournament. In recognition of breast cancer prevention, diagnosis and survivorship, Nationwide TOUR players wore pink as part of their golf attire. It was a day of education and activities for everyone culminating in a reception and fashion show at the TPC at Wakefield Plantation clubhouse.

Breast cancer survivors were the stars of the evening as they modeled the latest fashions. Samuel Cole Salon stylists, Whitney Heath, Rodney Robledo, Robyn Murphy, Yvette Cannas, Carolyn Nord, Sara Beard and Nikki Galloni readied the models’ hair and makeup for their strut on the runway. Jack Ray spoke to the audience on why this cause is near and dear to his and Joelle’s hearts having both of their mothers affected by this disease. He also shared salon secrets on how to recreate that salon look at home.

“We were happy to join in the battle against Breast Cancer once again. It is a disease that affects so many people- it feels great to lend our support in efforts to raise awareness,” said Joelle Ray.
Ashley Collins (far right) with her Great Lengths instructors

April 28, 2010 (RALEIGH, NC) – The award-winning Samuel Cole Salon now offers Great Length Hair Extensions to their guests. Why Great Lengths? “After spending many hours researching extensions, I, along with the salon owners, Jack and Joelle Ray, decided Great Lengths would be an excellent fit for Samuel Cole Salon. Great Lengths offers the highest quality hair, the extensions do not compromise the health of the hair that they are attached to, and they deliver unbelievably natural results. My experience at the Great Lengths training far exceeded my expectations. The quality of the extensions and the vigorous training required to master the technique makes Great Lengths the ultimate in extensions. I am thrilled to be adding such a transforming and unique service to our salon,” said Ashley Collins, Samuel Cole Salon Senior Designer/Mentor/Director of Bumble & bumble Network Educator Team.

Great Lengths' birthplace is London, one of the world's greatest fashion centers. David Gold, founder of Great Lengths, had set himself the goal to develop a hair extension system as simple to use as cutting or drying. When in 1991 he had developed and patented the Great Lengths principle he had simultaneously discovered the first method of thickening thin and fine hair in a very simple way.

This invention set off a revolution in 1991. For the first time David Gold could offer hair extensions and hair thickening in one system. Great Lengths has become a sign of our times: men - and particularly women - have started preferring non aggressive technical solutions and natural products.

“Ashley brings her famous dedication and expertise to this amazing new service. Whether you’re looking for the straight-up glamour of full length extensions or adding tons of volume to thinner hair, our clients are going to love this service”, said Joelle Ray.
Samuel Cole Salon's Jack Ray & Sara Beard

March 1-3, 2010 (RALEIGH, NC) – Samuel Cole Salon’s owner and Director of Education, Jack Ray and Stylist of the Year, Sara Beard attended Current Workshop at Bumble and bumble University (Bb.U) in NYC. These veteran hairdressers enhanced their passion for their craft in this rigorous 3 day advanced cutting course. They refined their techniques learned in prior Design School cutting classes by learning to translate editorial references and fashion trends for their clients and developing an eye to design modern haircuts. They engaged in daily hands-on sessions with multiple models, experienced inspirational demos, and learned to incorporate trends and modern influences into their work.

“What makes Bb.U’s Current Workshop so cool is that it integrates two prerequisite classes – one that is more technique-oriented and one that is more theoretical. The combination of these two classes is in a word “enlightening”. It cements the concept of a truly customized, current haircut for a client as opposed to cookie cutter hair cutting. That is how you can take the inspiration of an iconic image like Sasson’s cut on Twiggy back in the 60’s and give it an up-to-date or current feel for your client today,” said Ray.
